Students in the Business Professionals of America (BPA) program at Clear Horizons Early College High School and Clear Lake High School recently won big at the National Conference earlier this month.

A total of eight Clear Creek ISD students placed in the top 10 within their categories. Olivia Tovar from Clear Horizons earned first place in the Prepared Speech category.

“To reach the national level, students first had to place at the regional conference and state leadership conferences,” said Clear Horizons BPA sponsor Sharlene Kahlich.

The national conference was held virtually this year with more than 6,000 attendees. Students who place at the conference receive a medal and the possibility of scholarships.

“The skills they learn are workplace skills, so they are crucial for students’ futures,” Kahlich said. “They not only learn the content of their individual events, such as word processing or coding, but they also learn presentation skills, business etiquette and persistence. I have had students tell me that joining BPA was the best thing they did in high school and that it prepared them for the college and scholarship interviews.”

Business Professionals of America is a national organization for intermediate, high school and college students preparing for careers in business, finance, information technology and other related fields.
