Intelligent Lives movie bannerSpecial Education PTA members were treated to a free movie screening of Intelligent Lives on Wednesday, September 11. The documentary by awarding-winning film-maker Dan Habib follows three young American adults with intellectual disabilities as they navigate high school, college, and the workforce. Academy Award-winning actor and narrator Chris Cooper shares the story of his son, Jesse, as the film challenges what it means to be intelligent and how people of all abilities can fully participate in higher education, employment and relationships.

"The film's subjects are engaging and endearing, coping with their struggles with optimism and good humor, and the support of family and friends," said Dr. Cyndi Short, Executive Director of Special Services. "It is thought-provoking and showcases a convincing argument for greater inclusiveness."

Parent Deb Ludban also thought highly of the film.

"It was an incredibly moving and motivating film for me. It showed how far we have come in recognizing the beautifully diverse attributes of humans, as well as how far we still have to go," she said. "While watching the movie, I was able to see directly applicable situations for my children, and all children. It helped me see a light at the end of the tunnel from all the day-to-day challenges of special needs."

The movie is available for viewing at the new Special Education Parent Resource Center located in the Learner Support Center. If you would like to attend a screening of the film on Friday, November 22, please go to the PRC calendar to register.
