safety committeeThe Clear Creek Independent School District has formed a working summer committee to evaluate the current status of school safety and formulate recommendations to improve the learning and working environment for the 42,000 students and 5,000 staff members of the district. “The Clear Creek ISD School Safety Committee is in response to our shared concerns following the Parkland, Florida and the Santa Fe high school shootings,” said Greg Smith, Superintendent of Schools. “This is a community issue that requires a diverse group of individuals to come together to work for the common well-being for children.” The committee charges are as follows:

• Recommend appropriate changes and timelines to ensure a safe and nurturing learning environment for students and staff
• Identify sources of funding from Federal, State and Local levels to support recommendations including both fixed assets and personnel
• Consider recommendations from Governor Abbott’s discussion on school safety
• Identify, investigate, and address causal factors for students in crisis.
• Identify quality social media monitoring tools to investigate and remove threats to schools

The committee is comprised of 15 parents equally distributed across the 13 cities and two counties of Clear Creek ISD. A random drawing of names from 832 interested parents was held on Friday, June 1, 2018. Additionally, the superintendent appointed staff and students to serve on the committee. Law enforcement officials from Houston Police Department, League City Police Department, Galveston County Sheriff Department and the FBI were invited to participate. Three mental health service providers and three faith-based leaders rounded out the committee roster. The committee members are listed here.

The committee will meet every Tuesday through June. It will make its preliminary recommendations to the public during a community meeting on July 16, 2018 at 6 p.m. at Clear Springs High School. The public is encouraged to stay up-to-date on the committee’s work through the district’s website at where agendas, minutes and supporting documents will be posted. The committee will also accept comments electronically.
