CLEAR CREEK ISD KICKS OFF VETERANS DAY EVENTS WITH MOVING SALUTE TO MILITARY SERVICE
Friday football, fans and freedom. Put them all together and you get the CCISD 2015 Salute to Military Service. With the November 6 Clear Creek High School vs. Clear Lake High School football game as the backdrop, the District took time out to honor past, present, and future members of the armed forces, and their families, for their sacrifice.
The League City Fire Department hoisted the American flag from a fire truck to greet arriving fans at the gates. Members of the fire department also joined together with the student body and JROTC to help unfurl the ‘Texas-size’ American flag onto the field for the National Anthem. Students of the Joint Service Color Guard, led by CCISD’s Captain Timothy Burroughs and Lieutenant Colonel Wendell Harris, presented the colors. Adding to the patriotic pageantry, fans were treated to a U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter flyover at the conclusion of the anthem.
Although a thick fog rolled in preventing the planned skydiving demonstration by the Wounded Warriors Skydiving Team, it did not dampen the spirit of a visibly grateful community. Fans cheered as more than 30 wounded soldiers and their families were brought onto the field, visiting from Warrior Transition Battalion, Brooke Army Medical Center, and Fort Sam Houston. Their VIP visit to the Bay Area was made possible by the Children of the Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund, Texas Chapter. Upon their arrival to Veterans Memorial Stadium, each guest was pinned with a boutonniere designed and hand crafted by Floral Design students of Clear Creek High School and instructor Natalie Terry.
CCISD Superintendent Dr. Greg Smith presented the game ball to World War II Veteran Robert Sharp who served in the Army and fought bravely in the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines. The Clear Creek High School band, under the direction of Ogechi Ukazu, and the Clear Lake High School band, directed by John Pearce, performed America the Beautiful and My Country Tis of Thee for the honored guests.
