Teacher Certification

Teacher Certification

Whether you are a recent college graduate, a mid-career changer, a teacher from another state/country, or someone who does not yet have a college degree, the information below outlines how to become a teacher in Texas.

Teacher Certification Requirements

In general, there are five basic requirements for someone new to the field of education to become a certified teacher. These requirements are not necessarily completed in sequence, and it is recommended that you discuss your plans to become a teacher with an Educator Preparation program early in the process. Click here for more information.

Alternative Certification Programs

Alternative certification programs (ACP’s) offer a nontraditional route to teacher certification that may allow you to teach while completing the requirements. We encourage you to learn more about ACPs and to verify the list of approved programs. CCISD consistently reaches out to approved programs for qualified candidates for open positions and student teaching/internships.

Out-of-State Certified Educators

To start the Texas certification process, you need to apply for a "Review of Credentials" through the State Board Educator Certification (SBEC). They will review your information and tell you which exams to take. If you were required to take tests to obtain the certificates that you submitted for the review of credentials, you may submit additional documentation for possible exemption of Texas tests. You can register for the required exams and download the study guides at the Texas Educator Certification Examination Program testing website. For information, please visit the SBEC website.
