The Friendswood City Council Chambers were a little more crowded on December 3 as ten Wedgewood Elementary students shared the desk with councilmembers for a portion of the Friendswood City Council regular meeting.  In an ongoing effort with the City of Friendswood, the meeting allows Wedgewood second graders to experience a firsthand simulation of civic engagement.

During the meeting, students turned into mock councilmembers with Noah Regner as Mayor, Eli Chambers as City Secretary, Brody Mengarelli as City Attorney, Logan Manning as City Manager, Bianca Ganoza as Councilmember Position 1, Hayden Scott as Councilmember Position 2, Brooklyn Gordon as Councilmember Position 3, Lojain Khandria as Councilmember Position 4, Emily Rojas as Councilmember Position 5 and Samuel Herring as Councilmember Position 6. The students considered and voted on a resolution declaring December 4, 2018 as Wedgewood Elementary School Day in Friendswood. Following the student vote, the resolution was officially approved by the Friendswood City Council.

“These students are our future leaders,” said Friendswood Mayor Mike Foreman. “We are happy to support Clear Creek ISD’s character education program and want these students to understand that as public servants, we’re all in this to give something back to our great community.”

The meeting, which serves as an opportunity for students to foster leadership development skills and learn more about the political process, culminated with a reception for students, parents and community members.
