The Friday night lights shown bright on all active and veteran military at the November 9 Clear Brook High School vs. Clear Lake High School football game at CCISD Challenger Columbia Stadium. During halftime, Clear Creek ISD also paid tribute to the service members and 100-year history of the Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base.

The forces stationed at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base are a critical Department of Defense presence in this strategically vital region. As one of the largest metroplexes in the United States, the greater Houston area is home to a quarter of the nation’s petrochemical refineries and houses the largest medical care and research complex in the country.

The Base celebrated its 100th anniversary last year marking its beginnings in 1917 as an Army air strip. Today, Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base is one of the few World War I installations still in use and is home base of the Texas Air National Guard 147th Attack Wing.

The League City Fire Department flew a giant American Flag as backdrop to the Salute to Military Service game. As is tradition before all football games at Challenger Columbia Stadium, all active and veteran military service members were encouraged to stand and be recognized, and student groups made and hung spirit signs in appreciation of military heroes. Clear Brook JROTC presented the colors and flags representing each service branch as Clear Brook High School’s Company B choir performed the National Anthem. The Clear Brook and Clear Lake high school bands and dance teams performed a medley of patriotic pieces to mark the Veteran Day holiday and honor the men and women who serve the nation.

After a videoboard feature spotlighting the history of the Base, 147th Attack Wing Commander, Colonel Matthew Barker was introduced to stadium fans along with Senior Airman Aaron Anderson, Senior Airman LeighAnne Rivera, Tech Sergeant Van Pham, Master Sergeant Dwyn Dolgner and Staff Sergeant Kara Additon who is a 2011 Clear Springs High School alum.

“I speak for everyone stationed at the base when I express my thanks to CCISD for recognizing the historic and strategic significance of the Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base,” said Colonel Barker. “I am proud to lead an extraordinary team of active and reserve service members who guard our nation, our waters and our region from this vital military installation every day,” he said.

The Base also boasts the unique distinction of serving all five branches of the U.S. military – Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.
