The Clear Creek Independent School District has teamed up with the Partners Resource Network to offer seminars for parents of children and young adults with disabilities. The Partners Resource Network TEAM Project offers parents, at no cost, workshops on important topics from a parent’s view. “In Clear Creek ISD, we continuously strive to improve the school-to-home connection through effective communication,” said Dr. Cynthia Short, Executive Director of Special Services. “We are thrilled to bring this important resource to our families as we all work together to meet the needs of each child.”
This is a program designed for parents by parents of children with special needs. Celia Ulloa, the organization’s regional coordinator, said she better understood her daughter’s learning disability and what support she could receive from the school through the TEAM project many years ago and this is one important way of her giving back. “That is what makes this program unique. I understand what parents go through because I was once there. It’s truly an initiative designed from parents to parents of children who have a disability and this organization empowers parents through the process,” Ulloa said.
The Partners Resource Network is funded by the U.S. Department of Education of Special Education Programs. It is not a parent advocate service. The group’s mission and funding is tied to ensuring parents have access to information, training and so that their children can achieve their fullest potential.
The parent curriculum, approved by the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to let parents know about the different special needs education programs and what their rights and responsibilities are once they find out their child would be receiving special education services.
As a starter, the Partners Resource Network TEAM project will host two parent workshops on assertiveness on March 9th from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the McWhirter Elementary Professional Learning Center located at 300 Pennsylvania, Webster, TX 77598.
At the workshop, parents will learn about the Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Process and how to communicate opinions, thoughts needs and feelings effectively in an appropriate manner during meetings to ensure their children are successful at school. For those parents who cannot attend, the 3:30 p.m. session will be live stream.
