Clear Creek High School Students Give Time to Boys and Girls Harbor

League City, Texas – The cafeteria at Clear Creek High School was busy with activity as members of the Student Council and Future Farmers of America (FFA) readied the room for their young visitors. The students were expecting a group from Boys and Girls Harbor for an evening of activities, food and fun. But, thanks to one student, the night’s festivities would be a little different.

Blake Speed, a senior and FFA member, was donating $1000 to the organization and a ceremonial check would be presented to representatives from the organization. The donation was a portion of the funds earned from the sale of his agricultural mechanics project at the Clear Creek ISD Livestock Show and Auction. His project, a large smoker on a trailer equipped with a stainless steel boiler, burners for a fryer and cutting boards, was a big hit at the auction and Speed wanted the earnings to help a worthy cause. And he already had an organization in mind.

Earlier in the year, the Clear Creek High School FFA participated in the Pasadena Livestock Show and Speed noticed that two students from Boys and Girls Harbor had been sponsored to raise steers in the show. Boys and Girls Harbor provides healthy, comprehensive residential care for children and families in crisis. Speed could see the benefits of participating in such events. “I thought this was a great opportunity that teaches kids the value of hard work and responsibility,” Speed said. “It helped me tremendously and I wanted to help other children have the opportunities that I’ve had.” Speed’s donation will go towards the farm and agriculture program at Boys and Girls Harbor.

Clear Creek High School has a long partnership with Boys and Girls Harbor. For nearly a decade the Student Council has hosted events for Harbor residents. Each year they have organized a Halloween carnival at the Harbor facility in La Porte and held drives for needed supplies. This, however, was the first time that the residents of Boys and Girls Harbor visited Clear Creek High School and the campus pulled out all the stops.

The evening featured dancing, board games and basketball, as well as dinner donated by Esteban’s Café and Cantina. The children from Boys and Girls Harbor truly enjoyed the time spent with their high school hosts and the benefits of the collaboration went well beyond one event. “Interactions with the Clear Creek High School Student Council have always been such a positive and fun experience for the families at the Harbor,” said Christine Shelton, activities coordinator at Boys and Girls Harbor. “It’s great seeing teens volunteer their time to give back to these kids.”

Shelton knows just how important the community relationships and donations are to Boys and Girls Harbor. “Without our community connections, our kids would not have the amazing experiences and opportunities that have been made available to them.
