Fifth grade students at Ed White E-STEM Magnet School in
Clear Creek ISD have completed construction on three full-sized skiff boats
they have been working on throughout the school year.
The E-STEM Skiff Program began last year with the former
fifth grade students constructing two boats from scratch. This year, with the
help of a few community mentors, the students were responsible for the entire
process of constructing, painting and learning how to row the skiffs.
Unfortunately, due to weather, the school had to postpone the official “launch”
of the boats in Clear Lake for both grades to September 2016.
Once the students have a chance to set sail on open waters,
the completed boats will be available to the public for purchase sometime at
the beginning of next school year. All donations will go back into the Skiff
Program to help purchase materials for students the following year.
If you are interested in being a volunteer mentor for the students
next year, please contact the Ed White staff at (281) 284-4300 and fill out the CCISD volunteer application online. Mentors do not need to be experts in
woodworking or instructional methods to participate.
